Piazza, New York Catcher

I love when the weather here is warm and sunny with no clouds in the sky. Those are by far my favorite days in the city, not necessarily for walking around because it gets way too hot for that, but to sit outside and read. I spent a lot of my memorial day weekend sitting outside at Bryant Park with my book, an iced tea, my iPod, and the sunshine. So much sunshine– hello ridiculous tan-line.

I also spent a couple hours wandering Central Park, still looking for the zoo! No luck yet, but I have time. Before I leave New York I will have found the zoo and the Jackie O. reservoir. The entire park is like, 51 streets/blocks long, it stretches from 59th street to 110th street. That’s a walk. I always enter at 59th street because my subway takes me right there (it’s also right next to where I work!) and the reservoir is at like, 95th street in the middle of the park. The zoo isn’t that far from my entrance, but I go in at around 7th avenue, and the zoo is at 5th avenue (the park itself width-wide goes from8th avenue to 5th).

There is still so much I want to do, but I have been trying to spread it out so as to not do so much my first month or so here. I still have a few museums to go to, and I have yet to go to the empire state building, and I also want to go to Battery Park (you can see the statue of liberty from there).

Anyway. I found this thing on Tumblr, and I’m going to do it. It’s called the 30 Day TV Challenge and I think with my vast appreciation for television, I should be able to accomplish it. Basically, someone came up with 30 different things about TV, and each day you watch one of the things. I’m starting tonight.

Day 01– A show that should have never been canceled- Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
Day 02 – A show that you wish more people were watching- How I Met Your Mother
Day 03 – Your favorite new show ( aired this t.v season)-This is a tie between Cougar Town/ Parenthood/ Modern Family/ Community/ and Glee. I’ll probably just watch one of each, I guess.
Day 04 – Your favorite show ever- Alias
Day 05 – A show you hate- This took me a while to think of because I don’t really hate that much, but I guess Pretty Wild is a really shitty show (and most reality shows on the E! Channel)
Day 06
– Favorite episode of your favorite t.v show- Phase One, Alias
Day 07
– Least favorite episode of your favorite t.v show- Season 3 Finale
Day 08 – A show everyone should watch- Scrubs, or It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, or Arrested Development
Day 09
– Best scene ever- The final scene of the season 8 finale of Scrubs
Day 10 – A show you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving- Gossip Girl or True Blood
Day 11 – A show that disappointed you-Heroes (season 3, duh)
Day 12 – An episode you’ve watched more than 5 times- My Musical, Scrubs (there are oh so many though)
Day 13 – Favorite childhood show- Ren and Stimpy
Day 14 – Favorite male character- Seth Cohen, The OC (obviously)
Day 15 – Favorite female character- Lucille Bluth- Arrested Development, or Liz Lemon- 30 Rock
Day 16 – Your guilty pleasure show- Gossip Girl
Day 17 – Favorite mini series-  I don’t have one, but I guess John Adams because Paul Giamatti is in it
Day 18 – Favorite title sequence- The OC (because of Mindy)
Day 19 – Best t.v show cast- It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Arrested Development
Day 20 – Favorite kiss- season 2 of The OC, the spiderman kiss
Day 21
– Favorite ship- physical ship- The Black Rock (Lost), relationSHIP- (toughest question) probably Ross and Rachel, Friends, or JD and Elliot, Scrubs, OR Ted and the mother on HIMYM.
Day 22 – Favorite series finale- Gilmore Girls, Lost, or Arrested Development
Day 23 – Most annoying character- probably Paris Geller, Gilmore Girls, or Jenny Humphrey- Gossip Girl
Day 24 – Best quote- “Pick me, choose me, love me”- Grey’s Anatomy
Day 25
– A show you plan on watching (old or new)- Mad Men
Day 26 – OMG WTF? Season finale- Season 2 finale of Weeds
Day 27 – Best pilot episode- Arrested Development, Modern Family, or It’s Always Sunny
Day 28 – First t.v show obsession- that I can remember, Gilmore Girls
Day 29 – Current t.v show obsession- Chelsea Lately
Day 30 – Saddest character death- Denny, Grey’s Anatomy

Well, since I am pretty pathetic, this is how I am going to spend my nights before going to sleep. Day 1 starts tonight!

I miss all my friends and I hope everyone is enjoying their summers!

Lightning Strikes Twice In New York

Sorry I’ve been so boring to anyone who reads this. I’ve been spending a lot of my time just wandering around the city, and getting lost in Central Park. So far, of the week I’ve been here, getting lost in Central Park is my favorite thing to do (in the daytime, of course). It’s just so huge! My first day walking around inside I ended up walking in a 20 minute circle, completely unknowingly. My second day there, I walked in on 57th street and out on 64th street. There is just so much to see and walk through. There are piles of rock that people just climb and lay out on and read, and on a second adventure I found a waterfall there. I really want to find the zoo, and the museum of natural history (DINOSAURS!), and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir (for you, Samantha).

Another place I have been spending my free time is Bryant Park. It’s just a nice outdoors area where people just sit and read, with a cute little cafe. It’s no where near as big as central park, mostly because it’s just a square of land, but there are chairs and table and a nice fountain!

Everything here is just like a giant adventure. Every time I leave my dorm its just to go explore more areas. I’ve walked around the Lower East Side a little, and I still have to walk around Greenwich Village and SoHo and some other areas, and I haven’t made it out to Brooklyn yet but I’ll get there soon. Even when there is nothing to do, it is just exciting to be walking around because everything here is just so different from being in Detroit. And the people watching! No matter where I am– the subway, a park, just walking around– there are just so many different people here. I love it. I get so distracted when I’m outside reading a book and I just stare at people (not in the creepy way, it just kind of happens).

Anyway. Yeah. The weather this past weekend has been kind of cloudy and overcast, but now it’s really nice, so I’m going to be spending a lot more free time outside reading 🙂

Hope everyone’s summer is going fantastically.

Island on the Coast

The past few days have been pretty similar to my first few days in the city. I started my internship a few days ago, which has been exciting. I haven’t really gotten into the swing of things yet, but one of my supervisors is out of town, so I think next week will give me a better ideal of what I’ll be doing this summer.

Monday after work, Brett and I had dinner at The Mermaid Oyster Bar. Neither of us had ever had an oyster before, so we got some. It was definitely interesting. And slimy. And it wasn’t bad, but I can’t say I’ll be the first to order them again. The other food we got was very good though. It was a very nice restaurant. Brett left yesterday evening, so I’m like on my own fo real now.

I didn’t have to go into work today so I took some time to walk around the Lower East Side some more. I found some neat little stores and restaurants, and then went to Whole Foods to pick up some groceries. The Whole Feeds has an entire room dedicated to beer– but the dorm I am staying in is alcohol-free, so I couldn’t get any.

Speaking of my dorm, my roommate still hasn’t shown up. I have no idea where she is, she was supposed to move in before me. She hasn’t answered any of my messages either. It’s not that big of a deal, I guess, I would just like to know if anyone is going to move in.

That’s pretty much all thats happened the past few days. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be really nice so I think I’m going to go walk through Central Park. When it’s rainy in NY its pretty dreary, but when it’s sunny it’s really nice to be outside. But also really hot and humid. It should be nice the rest of this week and the weekend though, so I’m going to try and walk around outside a lot and learn more about the city.

These Shoes Were Made For Walking…

I need shoes that were made for walking. Two days in the city and we haven’t stopped moving. It’s exciting, fun, amazing, and also incredibly tiring. My feet are incredibly sore.

Anyway. Brett and I got to the airport and were about to board the plane, when who do we see? Our high school Spanish teacher. We stayed, talked, and ended up sitting right behind him and his wife on the way to New York. Weird. The flight was fine, dozed off a little, and landed in New York around 10:20. We took a cab to my dorm, and started unpacking. It sucks being in a dorm after living in an apartment. Having no space to myself, a tiny (and i mean TINY) closet, a lofted bed, and a very small bathroom are not things I am looking forward to. But I have a really nice view. My room is a corner room so I have more windows, and one window looks right out onto the Williamsburg Bridge.

I unpacked all of my clothes and other belongings, and Brett and I took the subway to midtown/ Columbus Circle, which is where I’ll be working. After, we met up with our friend Laura and walked around Union Square / East Village, and went to this really quaint little Mexican restaurant called Mary Ann’s. They had homemade chips and salsa (absolutely some of the best salsa I have ever had) and a really good brunch deal- $12 for one entree, soup/salad, and a margarita. It was delicious. And it’s pretty close to my dorm.

After eating, we had to walk it off. So we walked more around that area, and went back and walked around Union Square, and just hung out for a little while. Then, later that night, Brett and I went over to his friends Matt’s apartment and hung out there with a few friends. We went on the roof and had a really beautiful view of the city.

Today, we walked more around the Columbus Circle area and walked near Central Park. We also went and saw Times Square (I saw a huge LOST series finale ad at the ABC building) and then we walked around Rockefeller center and I saw the statue that they show in the intro to 30 rock. After Rockefeller, we went and ate lunch and then went to the Museum of Modern Art.

MoMA had some very interesting things. The main exhibition was called “The Artist is Present” by Marina Abramovic. Basically, in an atrium, there was a big square outlined on the floor. Inside the square were 2 chairs, she sat in one, and the other was empty. Any guest could walk in and sit in the other chair and start at Abramovic silently, for as long as they wanted. Brett and I were at the museum for about 2.5 hours and only like 3 or 4 people sat in the chair, because they decided to sit and stare silently for a very long time. All of her artwork was pretty interesting, it was mostly about her in her art and things like that, and there was a lot of nudity. There was one piece where a naked man was lying down with a skeleton on top of him, and it wasn’t like a picture or a painting, there was a real naked dude with a skeleton on top of him right in front of your face. There was also a piece where two naked women stood facing each other, and people could walk through them.

There was also a whole room with paintings and things by Picasso, and those were amazing. They showed different stages of certain pieces, and a lot of his art work was based off of his feelings about the many (MANY) different women he was sleeping with.

There was a floor about architecture and design which had some pretty cool things. One of which was just @ on the wall. Modern art, right? There was also a big screen that you could touch, and on the screen it had different balloons and you would poke the balloon with your finger and it would pop, and what would come out would be a little quote or a little blurb. These little blurbs were different things from different dating sites, it was really interesting and kind of weird and also kind of creepy. A Stars song was playing, so I really liked it.

After the MoMA we just walked around the Lower East Side for a while, looking at different things around my dorm- restaurants, shops, bars, parks, etc. I live pretty close to China Town and Little Italy, so we walked through there and got some gelato.

And now, after two long days, I am exhausted. And I could really use a foot massage. Tomorrow I think I’ll probably go get new/better walking shoes (Converse are not cutting it) and then I’m going to meet with my internship adviser, and then who knows. Tomorrow for dinner Brett and I are going to The Mermaid Inn, which just won best new seafood restaurant in NYC, and it is also Zach Braff’s restaurant. Wooooo.

Hedonistic Me

I’m in the tedious process of packing for my summer in New York.

My brothers bed is currently packed with 3 months worth of clothes, two pairs of sheets, some towels, and some other accessory type things (belts, hangers, shoes, etc). Thankfully he won’t be home until tomorrow afternoon so I have to time move all my stuff someplace else (like suitcases?! wut?!)

Anyway, I’m going to edit some of my old entries from this blog and use it as a summer-blog so I can remember some of the hopefully awesome things I’ll have done in New York this summer. So from this point on some entries in the past that were previously public are now password-protected.

I miss everyone already, though.

Also, everything I say is my own and no reflection of the company I am working for or any one else who works there.

When I Lived Alone, Is There A Ghost In This House?

Within the next 2.5 weeks, I will have finished my junior year of college, I will have gone to California for to hang out with my family, and I will have moved to New York. EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING SO QUICKLY and I am FREAKING OUT.

I am INCREDIBLY excited for this summer. I am going to be living in New York (where I’ve always wanted to go), and working for a real entertainment company. I’ll be starting the life I’ve always imagined I’d have.

This will be my first summer where I haven’t been surrounded by my best friends. It’s frightening, but I know all of my friends will be doing exciting things.

I stared at this blank page for a while before deciding what to write on. The only reason I decided to write a new post was because of Jess’s comment on my last post (and she’s my wife, so I gotta listen to her!), but summer is quickly approaching, and while it’s not the only thing on my mind at the time, it’s taking up a good majority of my thoughts.

Walking Downtown

I am always really excited to be on break and go home. And then I get home, and I completely forget what I was excited about and cannot wait to get back to school.
